A bright & lively scene from Trowbridge's high street

Violet Von Riot is a contemporary collage artist based in Frome, Somerset, celebrated for her intricate, eco-friendly works crafted entirely from recycled materials. Since 2020, Violet has been creating bespoke townscapes and animal portraits from donated magazines, transforming everyday printed matter into vibrant, textured worlds. Her practice is grounded in sustainability, community, and storytelling - each piece a reinvention of discarded fragments brought back to life through imagination, patience, and extraordinary attention to detail.

Working exclusively with recycled and locally donated magazines, Violet cuts and tears her materials into hundreds of tiny pieces before carefully layering them into new compositions. This meticulous process gives her artwork a distinctive richness, as colour, texture, and narrative merge into collages that seem almost painterly in their precision. Her works often feature local landmarks, wildlife, and familiar scenes that evoke a strong sense of place and belonging. Each piece carries with it a nostalgic quality - a celebration of community memory and the beauty of everyday life - which has made Violet a beloved figure in the Frome art scene.

Violet's autism plays an essential role in her creative process, contributing to the exceptional focus, patience, and sensitivity that define her work. Her unique way of seeing the world translates into an ability to capture both the physical and emotional essence of her subjects. Viewers are often drawn not only to the visual intricacy of her pieces but also to the quiet intensity that seems to animate them. Her collages invite people of all ages to look closely, to explore, and to notice the small details that bring the world to life.

A distinctive hallmark of Violet's work is her playful use of hidden messages. Words, phrases, and subtle symbols are often tucked within her compositions - a street name here, a whispered sentiment there - waiting to be discovered by observant viewers. She believes that art should be a continuing experience rather than a single moment of recognition, and her pieces are designed to reward curiosity. Each new viewing reveals something unexpected, encouraging connection and reflection. Violet often says she hopes that no one could ever grow tired of looking at her art, because there will always be something new to find.

Her chosen medium of recycled magazines aligns with her commitment to environmental responsibility. By transforming discarded paper into lasting works of beauty, Violet challenges notions of waste and value, turning what might have been thrown away into something cherished. This sustainable practice has not only earned her respect among eco-conscious audiences but has also deepened her connection to the local community, who often contribute materials that find new life within her work.

Violet Von Riot's art is as much about transformation as it is about creation - the transformation of materials, of places, and of perspectives. Her collages capture a delicate balance between realism and imagination, the familiar and the fantastical. Through colour, texture, and a sense of storytelling, she conjures a visual world that feels alive, inviting, and deeply human. Rooted in Frome yet resonating far beyond it, Violet continues to inspire through her vision of sustainability, creativity, and the enduring power of finding beauty in the overlooked.
