Jeff Murray
Jeff Murray is a British artist renowned for his extraordinary pen and ink drawings that depict urban and natural landscapes, mythological scenes, and travel-inspired vistas with microscopic detail. Based in Somerset, close to Bath, he creates both original artworks and fine art prints that invite the viewer to "look closer" and discover new layers in each composition.
Born in 1986 near London, Jeff was sketching from early childhood, drawn to artists such as M.C.?Escher, Salvador Dalí, and H.R. Giger-particularly captivated by Escher's impossible geometry and illusions. Inspired by these creators, he developed a fascination with precision, pattern, and visual puzzles. He studied Graphic Design at university, graduating in 2007, though he eventually realised that his passion lay in hand drawing rather than digital design.
Driven by wanderlust, he spent several years travelling across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New?Zealand, using travel and culture as creative fuel. While living in Queenstown, New?Zealand, Jeff sold his travel sketches and pen and ink drawings at artisan markets and galleries-discovering that his intricate style resonated with a global audience. This success led him to embrace art as a full-time vocation. In 2014 he returned to the UK, established his studio and home near Bath, and opened a gallery-from-home showroom where he displays originals and prints to visitors by appointment.
Jeff works almost exclusively in pen and ink (stippling and fine line) on canvas or heavyweight paper. His practice involves intense, disciplined mark-making-sometimes thousands of dots or lines-to build richly textured landscapes, cityscapes, myth-inspired maps, and surreal, illusionary compositions. His themes include ancient worlds, fictional maps, architectural city grids, nature inspired vistas, and works that blend realism with illusion. He frequently explores perspective, scale, and historical or mythical narratives, encouraging viewers to engage deeply with each visual story.
His major personal project A Greek Odyssey took nearly 1,000 hours to complete over several months and reflected years of research into Greek mythology-incorporating dozens of gods, mythic landscapes, and symbolic details. The work was released as a limited-edition canvas print and open-edition paper prints, reaching an international audience and contributing to his growing reputation.
Jeff has exhibited internationally through his online platforms, artisan fairs, and gallery events, including art fairs and pop-up shows. His art is available globally via his website and print editions, and he increasingly represents work at international venues and events.
Though firmly visual in practice, Jeff occasionally writes about his inspirations and process in his blog and video interviews, reflecting on his travels, mythological research, and evolving approach to intricate drawing.
Today, Jeff continues to live and work in the English countryside. Each drawing builds on years of observation, travel, and obsession with the hidden details of cities, landscapes, and mythic history. With a deep commitment to precision and storytelling, Jeff Murray invites viewers into microcosmic worlds where imagination and reality converge.
